Months before its theater release, Keluarga Cemara (Cemara’s Family) grabbed the public’s attention mainly because it was an adaptation of a beloved drama series first aired on television station RCTI in 1996.
A total of 412 episodes of the TV drama Keluarga Cemara were broadcast, representing quite a success by the standards of Indonesian television, dominated as it is by romantic soap operas.
Keluarga Cerita originates from the short stories written by renowned author and journalist Arswendo Atmowiloto in Hai magazine in the 1980s. The stories were later published by Gramedia in six titles.
The film Keluarga Cemara should be understood by referring to its source, Arswendo’s short stories. What is the cultural context of the original version and its silver-screen adaptation?
The Keluarga Cemara short stories implicitly, and perhaps unconsciously, reflected the dynamics of rural and urban relationships during the New Order era, particularly when Arswendo came to Jakarta in 1972 and published Hai in 1977.
This period was characterized by the domination of the consumer economy, increasing urbanization and the increasing power of the New Order regime. Arswendo’s teenage stories at the time seemed to sustain the writer’s amazement at the dynamics between the robust society in Jakarta and those living outside the capital.

In the stories, Abah, his wife and their two daughters face economic hardships that force them to leave Jakarta and start a new life in a humble village in West Java.
For Abah, the new life signifies his “return to the grassroots”. But it is a completely different matter for his eldest daughter, Euis. She has to leave her metropolitan life behind and to adapt to a village teeming with residents wishing to become urbanites.
Keluarga Cemara is a world full of people struggling with social change and the idea of wealth in reference to Jakarta. There is Ceu Salma, a moneylender, and Tante Pressier, a newly rich woman, and Abah who works as a becak (pedicab) driver and bricklayer to make ends meet.
Abah’s little daughter, Cemara or Ara, also faces her own struggle with the family’s less-fortunate state: she dreams of buying a drinking bottle and a pair of shoes that her family can’t afford. Ara’s struggle described in Hai has often been contrasted with the life of Pipin, the daughter of Tante Pressier.
In the book Keluarga Cemara: Baju Pengantin (Cemara’s Family: Bridal Gown, 2001), Arswendo queries, “Who’s actually happier and more hopeful? Is it Ara who dreams of owning new shoes, or Pipin who has no chance of dreaming as everything is available?”
For Ara and her siblings, a desire to buy things often serve as a test of their honesty and gratefulness. The family becomes a source of moral strength of its characters in facing the social changes represented by the behavior of people around them.
The Keluarga Cemara movie, written by Gina S. Noer, offers a different viewpoint on urban-rural relationships compared with its original story.
Euis (Zara of girlband JKT 48) appears very urban. She is a modern dancer, smartphone user and speaks fluent English. But when she moves to the village, none of her schoolmates are fluent English speakers. Euis’ odd interactions with the villagers offer moments of refreshing humor.
Similar comedy appears on the scenes involving Abah (Ringgo Agus Rahman) and the people in his working environment. Ceu Salma, played very impressively by Asri Welas, particularly stands out with her high self-confidence despite her broken English. She commands in almost every scene she is in.

The film, however, shows no comicality in the “strange” behavior of Abah, his wife Emak and Euis as urbanites-turned-villagers.
Nonetheless, the humor in this film is one of its main strengths and makes it worth watching through its fairly long duration.
The innocent conduct of Ara, played delightfully by Widuri Putri, also offers some amusing moments. Ara is indeed the heart of this flick. She manifests the hope and honesty offered by the movie.
Ara claps her hands joyfully when Abah announces the family’s bankruptcy. Ara warmly welcomes Emak’s pregnancy, which actually poses more financial burdens for the family. Ara wants to remain seven years old forever for fear of being admonished by Abah if she grows up as old as Euis.
The movie places the Euis — Abah conflict in the main storyline. Euis shows her aversion to Abah for breaking his promises. When Euis wants to see her old friends from Jakarta, Abah gets angry and forbids her from going. When Abah takes Euis to school by his motorcycle taxi, Euis does not respond to Abah’s distant bye-kiss.
In the movie, Abah is no longer a becak driver as in the original story although a becak is present for nostalgia.
When the conflict reaches its culmination, the film conveys its message: return to the family.
Keluarga Cemara focuses on the cohesion of a family. It portrays honesty as a challenge as well as a core value in keeping the family together.
Euis threatens the family’s unity when she lies in order to meet with her friends from Jakarta. Abah makes the same mistake when he acts sternly in front of his family without admitting that he is craving the family’s attention and affection.
The message of family cohesion is indeed relevant to the social situation today. Twenty years after the Reform era in 1998, we witness how horizontal conflicts arising from identity and practical politics pose a tough challenge to our social fabric. Social cohesion seems very hard to achieve as people engange in heated political debates on social media and WhatsApp groups.

It is therefore reasonable for this film to propose family cohesion as a solution, a shelter from the storm.
This film calls on us to believe that a good, cohesive family is an asset for doing good deeds and spreading virtue in life. Although it may be scientifically inaccurate, once in a while we also need to cherish such sweet aspirations.

THE REVIEW AND MORAL VALUE OF FILM "MAMA"

Title: MAMA
Genre: Horror, Drama
Author: Andres Muschietti
Director: Andres Muschietti

Duration: 100 minutes
Language: English
Cast: Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster Waldau, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nelisse, Daniel Kash, Javier Botet, Jane Moffat, Julia Chantrey, Jayden Greig, Sydney Cross.

Synopsis
A man kills several of his business partners and his estranged ex-wife, then runs away with his children: a young Victoria and baby Lilly. After speeding on a remote, snowy road, he crashes into the woods and takes the children to a nearby abandoned cabin he wanders upon. Realizing the mistakes he has made, he prepares to commit murder-suicide but at the last moment is killed by a strange figure in the cabin. Victoria looks at the figure but only sees a blur as her glasses were broken in the crash.

Five years later, their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend Annabel (Jessica Chastain) have been madly searching for his brother and nieces using the inheritance of his brother. The searchers stumble upon the crashed car and find the two children in the cabin. In this time, they have become completely like animals, with Victoria physically shielding Lilly in a defensive stance to the intruders. They are put under the care of a psychiatrist, Dr. Dreyfuss. There is a legal dispute over custody of the children between Lucas and a rich aunt on the children's mother's side, while the court questions the ability of Lucas and Annabel to raise the children in a small apartment with little income given their special needs. Dr. Dreyfuss agrees to recommend Lucas and Annabel as the children's legal guardians as long as they agree to move into a special home used to perform case studies, knowing that he would not be able to monitor their progress if their aunt, who lives on the other side of the country, were to obtain custody.

It quickly becomes apparent that the strange figure, whom the children repeatedly refer to as "Mama", is in the new home with the children. Her history is given throughout the movie through a combination of dreams Anabelle has (induced by Mama), research by Dr. Dreyfuss, and conversations with Victoria. "Mama" was a former patient at a mental asylum in the 1800s; her appearance and simple actions imply she had Down Syndrome, though this is never officially stated. She breaks out of the asylum and stabs a nun who had taken Mama's baby (also named Lily) into her care then steals the baby back. Chased by the authorities, she ends up at the edge of a cliff overlooking the lake; seeing no other path, she jumps and hits a tree branch on the way down. While Mama fell into the lake, the baby (killed by the impact) was stuck to the tree trunk and was recovered by the pursuers. Mama becomes a ghost, twisted by the sad emotions of not knowing where her child is (she is unaware of why the baby was not in the lake with her). This causes her to take a form of physically being twisted, with body parts askew and many joints bending the wrong way. She searched the woods for centuries trying to find her baby, until she stumbled upon Victoria and Lily about to be killed in the cabin, and began taking care of the children as her own.

Mama's presence is generally signaled by black butterflies and electrical problems. She plays with the children but hides from sight of anyone else; Victoria always takes off her glasses when she looks at Mama and tells Dr. Dreyfuss she won't come where she can be seen. Early in the movie, Lucas is pushed down the stairs by Mama and ends up in a coma. This forces Annabel, who does not want the children, to take care of them. Over time, Victoria becomes more like a normal child, but Lilly retains her animal-like nature; this is attributed to the fact that Victoria was older and thus had socially developed before their abandonment in the woods. Over time, Annabel becomes attached to the children, and later, Victoria begins to prefer her over Mama, but Lilly still remains completely loyal to Mama. Annabel becomes aware there is something wrong and that Mama may indeed be real. Victoria worries for her safety, saying Mama gets very jealous.

Dr. Dreyfuss begins to believe the stories of Mama, first because Victoria is able to tell stories with information she shouldn't be able to know, and later because he actually sees Mama. In the course of the investigation, he obtains custody of the corpse of Mama's baby. Dr. Dreyfuss comes to believe that Mama is located in the cabin in the woods and goes to investigate but is killed by Mama there. The aunt believes Annabel is abusing the children (due to bruises Lilly has from her animal-like tendencies) and begins to spy on the house for proof. Lucas has a dream induced by his dead brother while in a coma, asking him to save his children and pointing him to a location in the woods. Annabel visits Dr. Dreyfuss's office after another supernatural night at the house but finds out he is missing; she steals his objects related to the case. At this point, she learns of the aspects of the case which the doctor had found out about and finds the baby's corpse. At the same time, Mama becomes angry and attacks the children and Annabel; Victoria tries hard to defend Annabel and pleads for Mama to stop, but Lilly is still clearly loyal to Mama. Annabel is knocked out, but at the last moment the aunt breaks into the house and has her body possessed by Mama. Mama uses this body to take the children to the cabin.

Annabel wakes up, grabs the baby's corpse, and drives to the lake, finding Lucas along the way, who has left the hospital and gone to the site his brother told him about in his coma dream. They arrive at the cabin, finding the aunt's corpse but neither Lilly nor Victoria. Annabel sees the cliff that Mama had originally jumped from; remembering the warning that ghosts are twisted souls doomed to repeat their mistakes, she realizes Mama's intentions to jump off the cliff with the children. Lucas and Annabel arrive in time to stop the children from jumping, but Mama attacks them. The assault is stopped when Mama finds her baby's corpse, begins crying, and prepares to jump off the cliff with it, her twisted appearance reverting to a more human one. However, as they are leaving, Lilly shouts to Mama and she regains her twisted appearance and attacks again, knocking out Lucas. She grabs the kids and walks to the edge of the cliff. Annabel tries desperately to stop Mama, eventually beaten to the point that she can only hold onto Victoria. Once at the edge of the cliff, Victoria tries to convince Lilly not to go, and Lilly cries that Lilly, Victoria, and Mama should all be together. Mama jumps off the cliff with just Lilly, and upon hitting the branch, Mama and Lilly turn into a shower of butterflies. The movie ends with Victoria realizing that one of the butterflies watching over her is in fact Lilly, perhaps referencing a ghostly regret of Victoria not going with her.

The Moral Value of Film
This film has a very strong moral values. We can see from the sub-title "A mother Love is forever". a mother's love will never be replaced by anything and anyone. As the story in the movie "MAMA" although a mama was gone but her love never broke up, even though the world has a different mother will always be remembered. A mother that although during his life was nasty, or less attention but behind it all a mother must have loved her son.
In this film also teaches how to be a good mother, as the story Annabele though he was only a lover of Victoria and Lily's uncle, she was able to become a very good mother to the children and being able to make them come back to life as a human being. So, the good mother was not always she who bore us, but a stepmother was also able to have a sense of affection to their children, even though we often hear a definite evil stepmother, but not for this movie.
“A mother would give up his life for his own son. That's a mother!”
